BMKG: Beware of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in Indonesia

Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG) reminded the public to be aware of the potential for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in parts of Indonesia, today, Sunday (2/1).

According to the BMKG, this situation has the potential to hit parts of Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT, most of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua).

BMKG also detected the latest atmospheric dynamics that there are Kelvin and Rosbby waves in northern Indonesia and eastern Indonesia. From the wind pattern, there is also a convergence that triggers the meeting and slowing of the wind in southern Sumatra, the Makassar Strait, eastern Java, Bali, NTB, and the Flores Sea.

This situation causes a significant addition of wet air mass in the region.

Meanwhile, a number of provincial capitals were colored by sunny cloudy weather to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds today.

For the Sumatra area, the potential for cloudy weather is in the Padang area, light rain is in Pekanbaru, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung. The potential for moderate rain is in the Medan, Tanjungpinang, Bengkulu area.

The potential for rain that can be accompanied by lightning is predicted in the Banda Aceh region.

For Java, the potential for sunny cloudy weather is in the Serang, DKI Jakarta and Yogyakarta areas. The potential for light rain is in the Semarang and Surabaya areas. The potential for moderate rain is in the Bandung area.

The Denpasar area has the potential for light rain, while Mataram has the potential for moderate rain and the Kupang area has the potential for rain which can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

For the Kalimantan region, the potential for light rain is found in the Palangkaraya and Samarinda regions. The potential for rain that can be accompanied by lightning is found in the areas of Pontianak, Tanjung Selor, and Banjarmasin.

The Sulawesi region has the potential for light rain in the Palu, Mamuju, Gorontalo, Makassar and Kendari areas. Meanwhile, the potential for rain is in the Manado area.

The potential for light rain is in the Ternate and Jayapura areas. The potential for rain that can be accompanied by lightning and strong winds is found in the Manokwari and Ambon areas.
