Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae-yong said that the “big hole” in his current squad is in the striker sector.

“That is the weakest position in this squad,” Shin said in a press conference after the 2020 AFF Cup final second leg match against Thailand, followed in Jakarta, Saturday (1/1) night.

The South Korean tactician, Indonesia is difficult to have a reliable striker because the clubs in the Indonesian League 1 almost always entrust the position of “striker” to foreign players.

This, said Shin, became an obstacle to the development of the capabilities and potential of local attackers.

“Clubs use foreigners a lot as ‘strikers’ and that makes it difficult for Indonesian strikers to develop,” said the South Korean national team coach at the 2018 World Cup.

This situation also affects the 2020 AFF Cup which will be held in Singapore.

Although Indonesia managed to become the second ranked team (runner up), the striker’s contribution in terms of goals can be said to be very lacking.

Of the four “strikers” that Shin brought to the 2020 AFF Cup, namely Dedik Setiawan, Ezra Walian, Kushedya Yudo and Hanis Sagara, only Ezra was able to score in the tournament, namely two goals.

The contribution of the two goals from the striker can be said to be small considering that Indonesia is the most fertile team in the 2020 AFF Cup by making a total of 20 goals throughout the tournament.

Winger Irfan Jaya became Indonesia’s top scorer in the 2020 AFF Cup with three goals, followed by two goals each from Ezra Walian (forward), Evan Dimas (midfielder), Egy Maulana (midfielder/wing), Pratama Arhan (left back) , Rachmat Irianto (defending midfielder) and Witan Sulaeman (wing).

The remaining one goal each from Asnawi Mangkualam (right defender), Elkan Baggott (central defender), Ramai Rumakiek (midfielder), Ricky Kambuaya (attacking midfielder) and the suicide of Singapore defender Shawal Anuar.

The Indonesian national team confirmed themselves to be the runner-up in the 2020 AFF Cup after offsetting Thailand with a score of 2-2 in the second leg of the final at the National Stadium, Singapore, Saturday (1/1) night.

These results made Indonesia, which lost 0-4 in the first leg, lost 2-6 on aggregate to the tournament champions Thailand.

Thailand is also listed as the most successful country in the AFF Cup with six titles. Previously, Thailand achieved similar status in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2014 and 2016.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is the country with the most achievements in the second place of the AFF Cup, which is six times and has never once tasted the champion trophy. The same achievement was recorded by Indonesia in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2016.
