“Two players are from Crystal Palace.”

ONENEWS.MY.ID – England coach Gareth Southgate has given 50 players their international debut after Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith Rowe and Conor Gallagher were called up in November 2021.

But, who will be the next British debutant candidate?

Southgate says he wants to create a “club environment” for his players, where young players can make a natural progression to the senior team from the Under-21s and feel welcome.

With Arsenal pair Ramsdale and Smith Rowe called up in November. Meanwhile midfielder Gallagher’s fine form at Crystal Palace earned him his debut in England’s 10-0 World Cup qualifying win over San Marino.

As we enter another big year for England, we have selected 5 players who could make their international debut successors with the Qatar World Cup just around the corner.
On that note, here are 5 potential debutants for The Three Lions in 2022.

1. Trevoh Chalobah, Chelsea

Chelsea centre-back Chalobah marked his Premier League debut in August with a powerful strike from 25 yards to seal a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

It wasn’t a flash moment either as Chalobah has been a consistent performer in the eight games the 22-year-old has started.

The Sierra Leone-born defender’s form has seen him challenge experienced professionals such as Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger for regular places at the back.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said the academy graduate “isn’t swayed by too much praise or pressure that can come from the crowd” and that he is “a calm guy, very focused and knows what he wants”.

As Southgate is known to reward players who perform well at club level, is the call for Chalobah imminent?

2. Jarrod Bowen, West Ham

West Ham’s Bowen has made a fine start to the season and appears to have picked up form following a promising campaign since the 2020/2021 season.

Bowen spent the summer sprinting across the pitch at Hereford to improve his stamina and strength rather than going on holiday, being voted the Hammers’ strongest player by manager David Moyes in September.

Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp voiced his admiration for the 25-year-old, days before Bowen provided two assists in West Ham’s 3-2 Premier League win over the Reds.

Southgate is reportedly monitoring the attacking midfielder, with a call to the card if his fine form continues.

With England and Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho making a poor start to the Premier League campaign and Jesse Lingard also struggling for several minutes at Old Trafford, is there a chance for Bowen to stake his claim?

3. Eberechi Eze, Crystal Palace

Patrick Vieira’s new-look Crystal Palace feels almost tailor-made for 23-year-old Eze. The attacking midfielder impressed with his pace and power in his maiden Premier League campaign last term, providing four goals and six assists under Roy Hodgson.

To the chagrin of Palace fans, Eze has been out of action since he picked up an Achilles injury in May, the same day he was named in Southgate’s provisional squad for Euro 2020.

The former QPR man returned to action at the end of November and more first-team chances are expected, with Vieira already surprised by Eze’s ability.

“Technically, I think he is top of the Premier League, I think he is up there with some of the best players in the league,” said the Palace boss.

4. Ivan Toney, Brentford

As the Championship’s top scorer last season, Toney helped lead Brentford to Premier League promotion for the first time.

After scoring 33 goals, the 25-year-old striker caught Southgate’s attention. A hard-working natural finisher with a sublime touch and creative spark, Toney’s journey into the Three Lions deliberations was longer than most.

Aged 22 in 2018, Toney is adrift of Newcastle United having made just two Premier League appearances for the club from the bench in three years after moving to St James Park from Northampton.

He was on loan six times by the Magpies before he was given a fresh start when he was sold to Peterborough for 300,000 (Rp 5.7 billion) in the summer of 2018.

Toney scored 49 goals in 94 appearances for Posh before he was signed by the Bees for £5 million in August 2020 as a ready-made replacement for Ollie Watkins, who left a month later for Aston Villa.

Now back in the top flight and continuing to “impress” Southgate, Toney could follow Watkins by earning a place in England. However, he himself has said that he is undecided about his international future as he is also eligible to play for Jamaica.

5. Marc Guehi, Crystal Palace

The 21-year-old Guehi has played every Premier League minute for Crystal Palace since arriving for £18m from London rivals Chelsea in the summer.

Chelsea fans would have liked to see Guehi given a chance at Stamford Bridge after his impressive Championship display while on loan at Swansea last season, but his breakthrough campaign came at Selhurst Park.

While often admired for his impressive physical presence, his fine technical abilities quickly saw him build a strong partnership with Dane Joachim Andersen at the heart of the Eagles defence. The Ivory Coast-born defender was part of England’s Under-17 World Cup winning team in 2017, and has captained the Under-21 national team this season.
